A step-down transformer changes the average voltage to step it down from 120 V RMS to a convenient working voltage (still AC).
A diode bridge can be used to rectify the AC signal, but it still has a lot of ripple.
An output capacitor can be used to filter our the ripple. A larger capacitor reduces the ripple more.
